PAZA works with Airsheds Council and AEMERA to Enhance Air Quality Monitoring in Alberta

On March 21, 2016, the Alberta Airsheds Council (AAC) – which represents Alberta’s nine Airsheds, including PAZA – and the Alberta Environmental Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting Agency (AEMERA) signed off on a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that will see our two parties working closely together to strengthen and better integrate province-wide environmental air quality monitoring, evaluation and reporting.

The AAC, Airsheds and AEMERA have been working collaboratively over the past several months to establish this formal agreement. The MOU outlines how we will work together going forward. Broadly speaking, the MOU will strengthen linkages between AEMERA and the province’s Airshed’s, and identify gaps in monitoring throughout the province – – ultimately providing a more complete and robust picture of ambient air quality in Alberta.

Some of the specific tasks outlined in the MOU include:

  • a province-wide review of the operation and alignment of air monitoring stations;
  • an annual provincial forum to discuss the MOU, work plan, and current and emerging air quality issues;
  • a commitment by all Airsheds to provide air monitoring data to AEMERA for online, public sharing; and
  • a clear and demonstrated commitment to strengthen linkages between AEMERA and regional Airsheds in order to identify gaps in the monitoring network, and ultimately provide a more complete and robust picture of ambient air quality in our province.

HINTON – Due to unusually dusty air quality conditions caused by traffic on Willow Creek Road and further exacerbated by dry weather conditions, Alberta Health Services (AHS) is issuing a precautionary air quality advisory for The Valley-area of Hinton.
